First Communion
Children in the second grade and their families are offered the opportunity to prepare for the sacrament of First Communion. Our sacramental preparation process is carried out through a partnership between home and parish. The primary teaching about the sacrament occurs in families and is supported in the Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) and in the school. Materials are provided by the parish and parents are coached in their use though attendance at parent meetings. The child and at least one parent also participate in two workshops which utilize a number of stories and activities to review content about the sacrament.
Childcare is provided during the parent meetings and for the workshops if a need for those services has been made known. There is no fee for this service.
The sacrament is celebrated during the Easter season at one of the parish liturgies.
Optional elements also offered as part of the preparation process include:
• The creation of a keepsake plate (First Communion Plate Painting)
• Photograph packages
• A DVD of the ceremony
Families wishing to participate in the preparation process for First Communion must complete a registration form, attach a copy of the child’s baptismal certificate (unless they were baptized at St. Patrick), and return the form to Therese Carroll-Caruso, Coordinator of Children’s Faith Formation in September. Our second graders enjoy baking bread as part of their preparation for First Communion. Parish “grandmas” baked the bread for our First Communicants.
Second graders paint keepsake plates as a remembrance of their coming First Communion.
