First Holy Communion is celebrated by second-grade children and their parents in the spring 2019.
Second graders in St. Patrick’s Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) will use “Encounter with Christ: Eucharist” by Our Sunday Visitor Publishing. Lessons will be fulfilled through a partnership between parents and the PREP catechist. The parish provides a workbook and a parent guide for each child. Each lesson has three parts: Invite, Discover, Live. The parent and child fulfill the Invite and Live parts at home. The classroom catechist fulfills the Discover part. All materials are explained by the Director of Faith Formation during one 90-minute parent meeting.
Second graders in St. Patrick School will use a curriculum entitled “Blest Are We” by RCL/Benziger Publisher. This single textbook contains the lessons for both Reconciliation catechesis and First Holy Communion catechesis plus additional lessons that correspond to the liturgical year. RCL/Benziger has a stellar reputation as a Catholic publisher. Lessons will be fulfilled through a partnership between parents and School catechists. This curriculum also includes helpful online tools and a Mass guide for your child’s preparation for Eucharist. Each lesson has five parts: Take Home, Hear and Believe, Respond, Prayer, & Chapter Review. The parent and child fulfill the Take Home part of the lesson at home. The classroom catechist fulfills the Hear and Believe, Respond, Prayer, and Chapter Review. All materials will be explained by the School catechists during one required 90-minute parent meeting. [Click on “Letter to parents…” below for dates and times of parent meetings.]
All School and PREP second graders and at least one parent per family are expected to participate in two (2) parent-child workshops, which utilize stories and activities to review content about the sacrament and rehearse with the children. [Click on “Letter to parents…” below for dates and times of parent-child workshops.] Childcare is provided during the parent meeting and for the parent-child workshops if parents request it. There is no fee for this service.
First Holy Communion will be celebrated by School and PREP families during Mass at noon on Saturday, April 27, 2019.
Families desiring to participate in the preparation process for First Holy Communion must complete a sacrament form, attach a copy of the child’s baptismal certificate (if they were baptized at St. Patrick, no baptismal certificate needs to be sent), and return the form to Tammy Kessler, administrative assistant for faith formation, by Friday, January 11, 2019. [If you submitted a completed sacrament form for your child’s First Reconciliation, you DO NOT need to complete a second sacrament form.]
